Is High End Camo Worth It?

Every now and then, on my YouTube Channel, I get a comment about how much of a waste of money some of the camo patterns I demonstrate might be.  I will admit, some prices are up there but let’s take a look at what you are getting.

In some cases you are buying a brand name but behind many of those brand names are backed with years of testing, re-designs to fit numerous hunting aids, engineered fabrics to shield wind, rain and release your body moisture along with a deep passion for hunting.

From my own point of view, as someone who started my camo collection by stopping in at Goodwill’s and Thrift Stores, I think it all depends on the type of hunting you are doing.  I have hunted box blinds, self climber tree stand, ladder stands, pop-up blinds and trekked for miles and miles in the backcountry and for each hunt, my needs can be different enough to require the options of a technical garment to something that just needs to keep me warm.

If we take an early season hunt in the Southeast, opening day for Whitetail occurs around the first weekend of September.  For the past few years, the temperatures have been easily in the 90’s with sweltering humidity.  If you went with a very inexpensive brand, you would be sitting in a pool of your own sweat for entire outing, shade or no shade. Something like the ScentBlocker Mens Long Sleave T-shirt in Mossy Oak Country DNA, would look the part of a hunter but being made of a 60/40 cotton/polyester jersey knit, it will perform like a basic t-shirt and most likely was made from a highly UV enhanced fabric that may just glow if a deer were to spot you.  This shirt does have an antimicrobial infused chemical in the fabric to reduce smelly bacteria so when you are soaked from sweat, it may smell less than regular t-shirt material. Granted, the shirt costs only $22 but the less expensive cost may just reflect your quality of your experience. This shirt was also made on the other side of the world.

Designed for warmer weather, the USA Made  Forloh SolAir Men’s long sleeve shirt, may be a better option at $89.

Forloh has designed by hunters to help keep you more comfortable so you can hunt longer.  Forloh uses their own cooling technology, called brrr® Pro.  This feature keeps you a lab proven 3.5 degrees cooler and shields you from the sun with a UPF rating of 900+.  The fabric also has mosture wicking properties to have you dry 300% faster than traditional fabrics.  With both antimicrobial properties and scent control, the engineering in this shirt far outweighs the cheaper alternative.  With a lifetime warranty and a free return policy, this purchase will be the smarter longer lasting decision.
